Report: Saints FB Michael Burton tests positive for coronavirus on eve of game vs. Lions

DETROIT — New Orleans Saints fullback Michael Burton reportedly tested positive for the coronavirus on the eve of the team’s NFL game against the Detroit Lions.

Burton, 28, a six-year veteran who has played in all three games for the Saints this season, traveled with the team to Detroit, NOLA.com reported.

According to a report by Pro Football Talk, the Saints and NFL officials have begun supplemental testing of players who were in close proximity to Burton. The league’s contact tracing identified three players, the website reported. Four other players not identified via bracelets worn by the players were sitting near Burton on the plane, including running back Alvin Kamara.

The Saints are awaiting testing for the seven players, plus Burton, who will be retested to ensure the original result was not a false positive.

According to The Athletic, the Saints discovered the positive test after the team landed in Detroit.

It is not clear whether the positive test will affect the status of Sunday’s game.

Already, two games that were scheduled for Sunday have been postponed. The Pittsburgh Steelers' game against the Tennessee Titans was postponed to Week 7 after at least eight members of the Titans tested positive for the coronavirus. On Saturday, New England’s game against the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs was postponed to Monday or Tuesday after Patriots quarterback Cam Newton tested positive.
