4-year-old boy dies, 3 other children critically injured in Chicago basement fire

CHICAGO — A 4-year-old boy died and three other children were critically injured when a basement fire broke out in a Chicago residence early Sunday, authorities said.

According to Chicago police and fire officials, the blaze occurred in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood in northwestern Chicago at about 12:20 a.m. CDT, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The 4-year-old boy was pronounced dead at Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, according to the newspaper.

A 5-year-old boy was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital and was in critical condition with smoke inhalation, WBBM-TV reported. Two other boys, ages 7 and 11, were taken to Loyola University Medical Center for smoke inhalation in critical condition, according to the television station.

Two adults were also injured in the blaze, police said. A 40-year-old woman was taken to West Suburban Medical Center in good condition with minor smoke inhalation, according to WLS-TV. A 35-year-old man was taken to Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center with minor smoke inhalation and was in good condition.

Officials said they were investigating the cause of the fire, the Sun-Times reported.
