A native of Mandiville, Jamaica, Al moved to Maryland with his family at the age of two. He discovered his talents in elementary school when he began singing in the choir and performing in stage plays at school and church. Al continued to practice his talents throughout high school, bellowing out bass tones in local choirs. After high school, Al soon discovered his passion for production.
Al was accepted to Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida and was awarded a Voice Scholarship with the Bethune-Cookman Concert Chorale. Al took his singing talent to another level, practicing everything from gospel to opera. During his sophomore year of college, Al discovered his passion for radio production and changed this major from Music Performance to Mass Communication. An active volunteer in college, Al also served terms as the Vice President and President of the Men’s Senate, as well as President of his fraternity, Iota Phi Theta.
An active member of the campus radio station, WBCC, Al served as the Production Director, in which his responsibilities included imaging, voicing drops and promos, producing shows, writing copy and training on-air personalities. Al was also well known around campus as DJ Suave-A, the sultry on-air personality behind the “Love Zone” show, his evening broadcast that entertained listeners with discussions about love and romance between relaxing jams. Al graduated from BCC with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication with an emphasis in Broadcast Production / Technology in May 2003. After graduation Shaw, now known as “AC” used his radio talents to land his first On air Show on the Treasure Coast for WFLM, which ranked number one with women 25-54 for two consecutive years. Being hungry and wanting to grow his audience as well as talents, Shaw moved to where the sun was hot and the beaches were hotter. WTPS, Radio One’s first Black talk station was where Shaw got his talents stretched in talk radio. As producer of the morning show and Production Director, Shaw helped WTPS get an FM sound on an AM signal. The next move was the number one Urban AC radio station in Miami, WHQT. The doors opened wide as Shaw shows his versatility by being an on air personality for WHQT’s Sunday night Old School Quiet Storm. Shaw also doubles as a swing talent able to do any air shift as well as Assistant Production Director for Cox’s Radio cluster of stations. Shaw can also be heard doing colorful traffic reports on WHQT and sister station WEDR. Not satisfied with just being Mr. “radio” Shaw went back to school to become a personal trainer and is currently certified helping clients begin a lifestyle of the fit and fabulous.
Al “AC” Shaw continues to be a voice to recon with in the voice over world and is found all over Miami dj’n weddings, hosting events and volunteering. In his spare time, AC enjoys being a personal trainer, and exercising.
