WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Friday said that the second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump will begin the week of Feb. 8.

House Democrats plan to deliver an article of impeachment to the Senate on Monday, The Washington Post reported. Schumer said the Senate expected to receive the article of impeachment from the House at 7 p.m. on Monday, with senators sworn in the following day.

After a two-week break for both sides to get their legal briefs in order, Schumer said the trial will begin the week of Feb. 8.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, had proposed a delay to the start of the trial into February, allowing Trump time to recruit a defense team, the Post reported. President Joe Biden also was in favor of a delay, in order to get other business -- including the confirmation of his Cabinet and COVID-19 relief legislation -- out of the way.

“The more time we have to get up and running to meet these crises, the better,” Biden said.

“I want to focus as much attention right now on the Biden agenda as possible, and minimize the attention on anything other than the Biden agenda,” said Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Virginia.

Democrats would need the support of at least 17 Republicans to convict Trump. While most Republican senators condemned Trump’s actions on Jan. 6, far fewer appear to be ready to convict, according to The Associated Press.

“It will be a full trial. It will be a fair trial,” Schumer said Friday. “But make no mistake: There will be a trial, and when that trial ends, senators will have to decide if they believe Donald John Trump incited the insurrection against the United States.”
