New York man recovering after sinkhole swallows him at Bronx bus stop

NEW YORK — A man waiting for a bus in the Bronx last weekend was hospitalized after the sidewalk on which he was standing gave way when a sinkhole opened under his feet.

Leonard Shoulders fell feet first an estimated 12 to 15 feet when the ground collapsed beneath him, raining concrete and debris upon his head and placing him in the company of more than a few startled – and, by Shoulders' account, huge – rats, WNBC reported.

“It could have been anyone. It was a whole scary situation. It was my son, and thank God he’s alive,” Cindy White, Shoulders' mother, told the TV station.

The real terror for her son, stemmed not from the fall but the rats because Shoulders, 33, was afraid screaming for help might cause them to enter his mouth, The Guardian reported.

Crews erected temporary fencing around the scene, and building inspectors have since determined the area beneath the sidewalk unstable enough to warrant the continued closure of three nearby businesses, WNBC reported.

According to the Guardian, Shoulders broke an arm and a leg in the fall.
