Getting to Know Cardi B

By Melissa Ruggieri, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

ATLANTA —

Fans took notice Sunday night when Migos’ Offset publicly thanked his “wife” while accepting the best group trophy at the BET Awards.

“Thank God. I thanked my wife. You should thank yours,” he said.

On the outside, Offset has been engaged to Cardi B since October but according to TMZ, the pair has been married since September -- before she was pregnant.

TMZ obtained a copy of the marriage license, filed in Fulton County court on Sept. 20, 2017, that confirms the union of Cardi B, whose legal name is Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar, and Offset, whose legal name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus.

The reports prompted Cardi to confirm the marriage on Twitter, saying, “This why I name my album ‘Invasion of Privacy,’ cause people will do the most to be nosey (sic) about your life.”

“There are so many moments that I share with the world and then there are moments that I want to keep for myself! Getting married was one of those moments! Our relationship was so new,” she said in a statement attached to the tweet Monday. “Breaking up and making up and we had a lot of growing up to do, but we was so in love we didn’t want to lose each other.

“Was one morning in September we woke up and decided to get married. We found someone to marry us, and she did. Just the two of us and my cousin. I said I do, with not dress no make up and no ring! I appreciate and love my husband so much for still wanting for me to have that special moment that every girl dreams of when he got down on his knee and put a ring on my finger and he did that for me!!” she said, referring to their onstage engagement at Power 99’s powerhouse concert in Philadelphia.

“At least ya can stop saying I had a baby out of wedlock,” she said.

But it was the Atlanta rapper’s proposal to fellow emcee Cardi B that riled up the crowd the most, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

While the artists, who were both on the show’s roster, were on stage, Offset dropped to one knee and presented his girlfriend with an 8-carat diamond ring.

Cardi B jumped up and down in excitement while fans applauded wildly, and they cheered even louder when Offset stood to place the rock on his lady’s finger after she appeared to say yes.

The two, both 25, have been publicly dating since earlier this year, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Apparently, the rumors were true.

Her frank talk and unapologetic attitude toward her past as a stripper have only bolstered her internet appeal; she’s landed everywhere from “Saturday Night Live” to Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show to the Grammy Awards (albeit as a collaborator with Bruno Mars).

Now Cardi, who will perform at the One Musicfest in September, is on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine for the second time in eight months (it’s technically the July issue).

The risqué photo, which Cardi released on her Instagram account after it apparently leaked elsewhere, immediately sparked the usual love it/hate it fervor on social media.

To complement a feature about her “love story” with Offset, of the Atlanta rap trio Migos, Cardi is posing bottom-less, her baby bump being kissed by her baby daddy as he slouches next to her in a bell-bottomed red suit.

“This cover is so special to me and means so much! Thank you to everyone who helped put this amazing cover together! …My daughter made it to the Rollin Stone cover !!!!,” she wrote on Instagram, also confirming the baby’s sex.

During her visit to Stern’s radio show in May, Cardi B mentioned that she and Offset are building a home in Atlanta for their new family.
