About the Program
Every year, the Motivated Youth program gives Miami-Dade students in grades 9 to 12 an opportunity to learn about community engagement and philanthropy by becoming actual philanthropists for a day.Around 100 students, selected from senior high schools across Miami-Dade, spend half a Saturday with representatives from local youth-oriented nonprofit organizations, as well as college-age mentors. The students and mentors split into groups, each of which is assigned a nonprofit partner. Each group reviews and evaluates a grant proposal from the nonprofit partner, and then decides collectively what is the best way to present the proposal to students in all of the other groups. Each group “pitches” its nonprofit grant proposal to all Motivated Youth participants, having learned about its nonprofit organization and how to effectively advocate its mission. Each student is given real charitable dollars to distribute to all of the nonprofit organizations as she or he prefers. The nonprofit organizations keep whatever money is directed to them by the students. Why Participate?Students joining the program will learn about many worthy youth-oriented causes in their community. They can use and develop their analytical skills as well as teamwork skills in the project. Some may gain a sense of purpose and direction as they are able to influence the gift. They are exposed to potential new friends, mentors or even future employers. We feel this is a way to bridge to gap in the community by building awareness of existing societal needs and a greater understanding of our community’s challenges. Other BenefitsMotivated Youth would be happy to provide community service letters for participating students. In addition, all participants will receive a free breakfast, a free lunch, and a free t-shirt.
