Join the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department and Miami-Dade County District 12 Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz on Saturday, April 6, 2013 for the dedication of the new skate park and new basketball courts at North Trail Park, 780 NW 127 Ave., Miami. The event will be held in conjunction with Commissioner Diaz’s annual District 12 Spring Festival and kicks-off with a 12:00 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony; followed by a host of free activities for families until 3:00 p.m. There will be free food, live entertainment, games, bounce houses, face-painting, and more. Kids are encouraged to bring along their Easter basket for an egg hunt that starts at 12:30 p.m.
In addition, Miami-Dade County departments, including Parks, Fire Rescue, Fire Venom Unit, Police, Canine Unit, Corrections, Elections, Library, Solid Waste, and Commissioner Diaz’s own mobile office will be on hand to assist residents with information on community services. Event parking will be available at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 12800 NW 6th Street, Miami.
“This new skateboard park fills a recreational need for children and the young at heart that have a passion and interest in skateboarding,” said Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “As we continue to make great strides in revitalizing our parks and green spaces, we are making a positive difference in the lives of residents in our community.”
“I encourage District 12 residents to come out and enjoy these fun, festival activities and see this new state-of-the-art skateboard facility. It is truly a recreational centerpiece for this neighborhood park,” said Commissioner Diaz. “Park spaces like this are a great way to inspire kids to find a form of exercise they can excel at and continue to be active.”
“Action sports such as skateboarding are great fun and promote physical fitness,” said Miami-Dade Parks Director Jack Kardys. This new skate park is another great example of how the Parks and Open Space Master Plan is providing this community’s residents and their children with more recreational amenities for their enjoyment and well-being.”
This marks the fifth skateboard facility in the Miami-Dade Parks system. The new skate park consists of a 120’ x 120’ concrete skate court plaza manufactured by Spohn Ranch Skateparks, equipped with skateboarding fixtures and covered spectator bleachers. The park also received new basketball courts, as well as new high-efficiency sports lighting and 178 new parking spaces. The project was funded with $1,081,500 from the “Building Better Communities” General Obligation Bond Program.
Miami-Dade Parks’ other skateboard facilities include Kendall Indian Hammocks Park, South Dade Park, Westwind Lakes Park, and Country Village Park--the County’s first skate park, opened in July 2009.
The 14-acre North Trail Park also has a recreation center, a playground, a walking path, a soccer field, and courts for playing tennis, volleyball and basketball. The park also offers facility rentals and a wide variety of recreational activities and programs for residents, including Miami-Dade Parks “Fit2Play: Health, Wellness and Obesity Prevention” Out-of-School program and its “Fit2 Play, Green It Up” Summer Camps for kids.
