KICK BUTTS DAY BASH:
The City of Fort Lauderdale is proud to partner with the Fort Lauderdale Kappa League SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco) chapter, Broward County Health Department and SWAT – Broward County to bring our residents the 1st Annual Kick Butts Day Bash at Carter Park, Saturday, April 13, 2013 from 1:30 am to 2:30 pm.
The idea is to promote healthy choices for our youth and to encourage youth and adults who do smoke to kick the habit. Throughout the course of the event, we will have contests, a talent show which will consist of: (1) step show; (2) drumlines and (3) Art Showcase.
The performers for the step show and the drumlines will hail from Fort Lauderdale schools. The art showcase will encompass not only our Fort Lauderdale schools but our parks and recreation afterschool program participants.
We will be giving away free turkey sandwiches for each pack of cigarettes a person turns in. Additionally, we will have games, music, etc..
Kick Butts Day is a national day of activism that empowers youth to stand out, speak up and seize control against Big Tobacco. The next Kick Butts Day is March 20, 2013. We’re expecting more than 1,000 events in schools and communities across the United States and even around the world.
On Kick Butts Day, teachers, youth leaders and health advocates organize events to:
• Raise awareness of the problem of tobacco use in their state or community;
• Encourage youth to reject the tobacco industry’s deceptive marketing and stay tobacco-free; and
• Urge elected officials to take action to protect kids from tobacco.
Kick Butts Day is organized by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and sponsored by the United Health Foundation. The first Kick Butts Day was held in 1996.
