Celebrating 15 years of India’s culture and heritage, the Association of Performing Arts of India will hold a Tribute Concert for Pandit Ravi Shankar at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Amaturo Theater on Saturday, March 2 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event features Kartik Seshadri, Alam Khan, and Hindole Majumdar, all noted performers in their own right, and lauded by the world famous sitar player, Shankar.
The evening features a full concert followed by a sumptuous vegetarian dinner. Tickets are $25-$45 for the concert and $30 for dinner following the performance. About the performers:
Kartik Seshadri is a sitarist and disciple of the late Pandit Ravi Shankar. His performances are noted for their "expressive beauty, rich tonal sensibility and rhythmic intricacy" (Washington Post), is a world-renowned sitar virtuoso and a composer. A child prodigy in India, he first attracted widespread attention after he began performing full-length solo recitals at the age of six. Since then he has been regarded as a musical powerhouse, performing in the world's most prestigious festivals and venues. In 2005 and 2010, Seshadri collaborated with prominent composer Philip Glass on the critically acclaimed Orion project. Seshadri performs extensively in his homeland and around the world ranging from venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, the Melbourne International Arts Festival in Australia, to the Dover Lane. http://youtu.be/SsV2fblDsp0
Alam Khan is the son of the legendary Sarode Maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan Saheb. Alam has been touching the hearts of audiences worldwide for the past 15 years. He has toured worldwide and established himself as Ustad Ali Akbar Khan's true heir and the face of a new generation of Sarode players, attracting praise and attention from musical icons such as Sitar Legend Pandit Ravi Shankar, Carlos Santana, Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead, Slide Guitarist Derek Trucks and many more musicians. http://youtu.be/2QBN-6YbCcU
Hindole Majumdar received his training from Sri Shibsankar Karmakar, a worthy disciple of late Ustad Karamatullah Khan. He has taken advanced training from the Tabla maestro Pandit Sankha Chatterjee of the Punjab Gharana, the school made famous by Ustad Allah Rakha Khan. He was also trained in South Indian Rhythm from Pandit S.Shekhar, the great Mridangam exponent. He has travelled extensively throughout India and abroad playing with many eminent musicians such as Ustad Shahid Parvez, Ustad Shujaat Khan, Ustad Irshad Khan and many more.
