Professor Frank Cooper opens this fascinating evening with a 15-minute multimedia presentation of how Berlioz's revolutionary "Symphony Fantastique" changed the direction of orchestral music forever, inspiring a whole new genre of tone poems and programmatic composition. He explores the curiosity of its storyline, the novelties of its form, the originality of its orchestration and the demands it makes on performers. Then, musicians from the Frost School of Music and The Cleveland Orchestra share the stage with Cleveland Orchestra Assistant Conductor James Feddeck in a "side by side" workshop exploring new works by Frost student composers, each inspired by or responding to the Berlioz. The echoes of this programmatic masterpiece resound today in new sounds and approaches. The contest-winning compositions are Daniel Choi's "Scaena Ager," Peter Learn's "Mosaique," David Mendoza's "Awakening," Matthew Taylor's "Three Glorious Days" and Richard Yates's "Imagined Music."
