No fancy fusions or evolutions here – Soul Power doesn’t need any. The horn-heavy band reinvigorates the great soul-R&B-funk music of the ’70s in a nonstop dance party. With revivalist zeal Soul Power plays everyone’s favorites by James Brown, Tower of Power, Average White Band, Aretha Franklin, and Earth, Wind and Fire. From “Down to the Nightclub” to “Living in America,” the large band puts its Eastside Horns up front, combined with a sizzling rhythm section, inspired instrumental solos, and the soulful vocals of Tommy Banks. In addition to Banks, Soul Power is finger-popping funky bassist Scott Willson and his bandleader brother Ian Willson on tenor sax, trumpeters Don Beck and Glenn Appell, Robert Todd on baritone sax, Patrick Malabuyo on trombone, guitarist Peter Fujii, Rick Bailey on drums, and Loren Linnard on keyboard. www.soulpower1.com
