Organization Coral Gables Museum Primary Category Classes, Workshops & Lectures Extras In conjunction with Coral Gables Museum's ECO-ATLAS exhibit, meet at the entrance of The Barnacle at 3485 Main Highway for a special guided tour. Step onto the pathway leading toward the main house at The Barnacle Historic State Park, and soon the noise of the city fades away. Majestic oaks, figs, and mastic trees spread their branches overhead in one of the last remnants of a once-abundant natural community-the tropical hardwood hammock. The term hammock derives from the Native American word hamaca, meaning shady place. It is now used in the South to describe small forests of mixed tropical and temperate plant species growing on patches of high ground. Not very long ago, this hammock stretched for 50 miles along the rocky ridge separating Biscayne Bay from the Everglades, but little now remains. Join a Park Ranger on a discovery of this native landscape and the historic house with the whimsical name.
