$8 9pm showtime McCoy Tyler Band: http://mccoytylerband.bandcamp .com/ Somewhere between Neil Young and The Devil Makes Three, Townes Van Zandt and Railroad Earth, with a little Bill Monroe and Tony Rice thrown in for good measure, lies The McCoy Tyler Band-a three piece acoustic trio hailing from the ethereal shores of Santa Cruz, California. The group formed in May 2011 by way of a craigslist add posted by songwriter McCoy Tyler, whom after spending six years performing strictly as a guitarist in groups throughout the San Francisco Bay Area (most notably Trigger Renegade and Brother Pacific), decided to try his hand in songwriting. Among the first to reply to his add were drummer and Sacramento-native Clinton Brown and Ohio-born upright bassist Chad Bowen. Both members acclimated quickly to Tyler's vision of a highly vocal-based style of folk music, complete with three-part harmonies and thumping rhythm sections. Shortly after forming, the group recorded their first EP entitled "What The Mountain Sees" at Tyler"s home studio in the Soquel Mountains just outside of Santa Cruz. Within their first year The McCoy Tyler Band has performed regularly throughout the bay area and California including shows at such notable venues as Kuumbwa Jazz, Don Quixotes, The Catalyst, and Moe's Alley. They have received much recognition and support from local radio legend Sleepy John as well as had the privelage to perform live at 107.5 KPIG and 88.1 KZSC. Rooted deep in the customs of American folk music, The McCoy Tyler Band seeks to pay homage to such traditions while incorporating their own unique style of lyricism, instrumentation, and performance. Their motto (in the words of David Grisman): "any tradition results from free thinking."
