This event is 21 and over Annie Keating WebsiteLinks New-York based singer/songwriter Annie Keating's fifth album, "For Keeps" is a keeper. Beautifully crafted songs combined with musical hooks and punches knock the listener right in the chest, making this album stand out as an instant classic. With refreshing honesty, grit and timelessness, Keating and her band of musical magic makers achieve a sound that is both complex and simple, new and vintage ... the first song gets it's hooks in you and after 12 tracks you just want MORE. Lucky for New Yorkers, Keating and her band will launch this new album with an extended live CD release party at Littlefield in Brooklyn on Thursday, 2/7 at 8pm. This proves to be an incredible night of music, with other amazing female talents on the bill, including Trina Hamlin, Natalia Zuckerman and Liah Alonso (from Left on Red) and her band. This brooklyn-based songwriter knows how to write and deliver beautiful songs with a magical earthly rich voice and arrangement that transfixes ... She has picked up a great (and well served) reputation over the course of her 4 previous albums, but here on ‘For Keeps’ it all comes into focus. No frills or posturing -- her sultry voice cuts straight to the heart. On her 5th album release, “For Keeps” Keating is at her best. She has arrived as an international songwriting tour de force. Talent spotted by BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris, Keating appeared live on the Bob Harris show in 2008 and has gone on to perform at leading national and international festivals including Take Root (Netherlands), the Glasgow Americana Festival (Scotland), the NJ Folk Festival, NXNE in Canada, NEMO and MEANY music fests and the Mountain Stage NewSong finals. Keating has performed on the bill with the likes of John Haitt, Dan Bern, Anna Egge, Bon Iver, Hot Club of Cowtown, Anne Heaton, Boris McCutcheon and Shannon McNally. Having grown up in Boston and taught herself to play guitar at age 12, Keating honed her craft at "The Underground" club in Providence, Rhode Island, while at Brown University. An activist and musician, she moved to New York City in 1992 playing music at night while advocating for civil liberties and social justice issues at various non profit jobs during the day. As her activist work took over, Keating put music on the back burner, not getting seriously back into it until shortly after her first child was born. At that point, she says, "I wanted to be home and make music again." So she made my first record at 34 years old and 3 more albums after that. She feels like she's just getting started, "I wish I'd had the courage to begin recording and taking music seriously earlier ... I'm making up for lost time." Keating is a late bloomer, but well worth the wait. She knows how to write and deliver beautifully crafted songs. She has picked up a great (and well deserved) reputation over the course of her 3 previous albums, but here on ‘Water Tower View’ it all comes into focus on an album that stands out as a superb example of contemporary roots music. No frills or posturing -- her sultry voice cuts straight to the heart. On her 4th album release, “Water Tower View” Keating is at her best. Liah Alonso - (Set time: 10:00 PM) WebsiteLinks Meet Liah Alonso and Kelly Halloran, collectively known as Left on Red. The two young women’s talents run the musical gamut but they are primarily an acoustic rock group featuring Liah on guitar, Kelly on violin, and both on vocals with lots of harmonies. Left on Red means simply to take your own direction. Despite meeting on a traditional gig Kelly and Liah’s true maturation as a duo actually began in the subway stations of New York City. Over the last 2 years LOR has wowed public audiences with their brand of fun socially relevant lyrics and improvisational instrumentation. In addition to busking, Left on Red routinely play in hospitals and nursing homes as well as performing for Veterans on a shared bill with Tom Morello and his organization Axis of Justice, Musicians on Call, YWCA and many more. Left on Red’s captivating shows consist of originals and cover songs, diverse in era, genre and language. The duo officially came together in early 2008 and in early 2009 they took their unique brand of music from the New York streets to the masses in the form of their debut album, which is available on iTunes. Their self-titled disc features an entertaining range of genres and topics that appeal to both men and women of all ages. “Shop” finds LOR singing about America’s addiction to retail, “Crash and Burn” deals with the poisoning of our food, while the self explanatory “High Heel Blues” and the duo’s first single “Jack and Jill” will hit home with anyone whose dealt with societal expectations. The beauty of LOR is they find a way to present heavy hitting topics in a fun manner, leaving audiences enlightened, empowered and happy. $10.00 - $15.00
