“The great poet Langston Hughes cut a fine figure in Overtown, in a community vibrant with culture. ‘Back in the day,’ Sam Cooke made one of the greatest live albums of all time, Live at the Harlem Square, in 1963. Cassius Clay jogged through Overtown's streets… Ray Charles used to perform in the area. And Martin Luther King Jr. would seek inspiration for sermon writing. Ike and Tina Turner fought and made up on NW Second Avenue, and long before she was famous, a 13-year-old prodigy named Aretha Franklin sang gospel in Miami‘s high school auditoriums. Patti Labelle always had a loyal Overtown following. Dionne Warwick got her start here too… and these are just a few footnotes from Overtown's momentous musical history” (miaminewtimes.com).
The Betsy is proud to salute this legacy in a program called Overture to Overtown, presented for Art Deco Jazz Week - only at The Betsy-South Beach. Scheduled to perform:
Mel Dancy, Bobby Stringer, Ken Burkart, Mike Gerber, Reuben Hoch, Tom Lippincott, Don Friedman, Nestor Zurita Trio, Sanna Vaarna & Darrel Reines, Arianna Neikrug, Adamm Joseph Tell, and Lloyd Reshard, Jr..
This is a free event - presented as part of The Betsy-South Beach Philanthropy, Arts and Culture programs. For more information, email us at artsandculture@thebetsyhotel.com or call 305-531-6100.
