Commissioned by NBC, Amahl and the Night Visitors, composed by Gian Carlo Menotti is one of the most beloved and widely performed operas in the world. The story takes place near Bethlehem in the First Century, just after the birth of Christ. The opera centers around Amahl, a crippled boy, and his Mother, who welcome the Three Kings into their poor home. Seeing the wealth that the Kings are carrying as gifts for the Child, the Mother attempts to steal some gold to help her son, but is caught by the King's Page. Seeing the reason why she has attempted to steal the gold, the Kings tell her that she can keep it, because the Child for whom they are looking doesn't need it. Amahl asks his Mother if he can go with the Kings to visit the Child and give Him his crutch as a gift. As soon as he offers his only wordly possession, a miracle occurs: Amahl can walk. Conducted by Elaine Rinaldi, Direction by Michael Yawney, Choreography by Octavio Campos.
