FEATURING: Deborah Davis, vocals Other musicians, TBA Jazz vocalist Deborah Davis returns to the Blue Note stage in her 14th annual Benefit Concert for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The proceeds from this evening's performance will be donated to the Society for blood-related cancer research and patient services. Davis's campaign for the cause began in 1997 when she joined the LLS Team in Training, running a 26.2-mile marathon in Dublin, Ireland. Though she completed the task with ease, she soon realized that she had a much better platform to raise funds. Davis is proud that the Blue Note family continues to support the cause as she honors her father Douglas E. Davis Sr. who lost his battle with leukemia in 1981. She also pays homage to jazz saxophonist Michael Brecker and journalist Ed Bradley, and she supports athlete Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the millions of patients who suffer daily with this disease. Davis is a jazz singer whose sound is infused with gospel, Texas blues, and a hefty dose of soul. A Dallas native, she began singing as soon as she could speak. Her jazz career began when her high school choir director (who was also a jazz pianist) started adding her to his weekend gigs. Davis went on to earn a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of North Texas, followed by a Certification in Recording Engineering from Cedar Valley College. Her musical development brought her to NYC in 1986, where she has carved out a niche for herself on the international jazz scene. Davis's distinct style of phrasing, extraordinary singing ability, and professionalism earned her a nomination of U.S. Jazz Ambassador by the U.S. State Department in 2004. She has sung for dignitaries at the United Nations and at various embassy affairs, including a performance for former President Bill Clinton. She was also invited to Athens, Greece, by the U.S. Embassy there to headline a benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina victims. Known to musicians as a hard-swinging singer who captivates audiences, Davis has been invited to perform with legendary jazz greats Ray Brown, Lionel Hampton, and Clark Terry, as well as a rare opportunity to substitute for Abbey Lincoln at the Blue Note. Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, and Lou Donaldson have all shared their stage with Davis, inviting her to jam. In addition, she has led her own bands featuring many of New York's younger jazz lions, including Delfeayo Marsalis, Cyrus Chestnut, Gerald Clayton, Christian McBride, Russell Malone, Brian Blade, and many others. Not limiting her talents to a jazz audience, she has also shared the stage with Bon Jovi and Billy Joel and has opened for Diana Ross, Celine Dion, Santana, Eric Clapton, Macy Gray, and more. Davis has lit up the stages of well-established New York festivals, concert halls, and jazz clubs, including the Blue Note, The Village Vanguard, Sweet Basil, Smalls, Smoke, The Jazz Standard, Tavern on the Green, The Rainbow Room, and more.
