This event is 21 and over Heavy Glow WebsiteMySpaceFacebookTwitterLinks Psychedelic blues rock band Heavy Glow displays a mastery of confidence and emotive power in their untitled follow-up to the highly acclaimed album “Midnight Moan.” To be released in 2013 under Purge Records and with the addition of a new drummer, the new album is a culmination of everything the band has been working towards since forming in 2008. The finished product flaunts nuances of retro rock through hard-and-heavy guitar tones, bombastic drum-playing and suave bass lines. Front man Mullins injects raw soul into his entrancing vocal melodies and cascading choral harmonies to create a sound that is both informed by the past and undeniably modern. Trapdoor Social (closing set) WebsiteLinks TRAPDOOR SOCIAL is Merritt Graves and Skylar Funk, and they’re here to save the world. Merritt and Skylar met at the Environmental Analysis program at Pomona College in Southern California. By day they studied the challenges for planet Earth, and by night they found refuge in their music. “I’m extremely anxious about things going wrong in our environment, and that becomes a source to draw from.”, says Merritt. “A song for me is just about taking energy and transferring it into a sonic medium.” Merritt, who hails from Iowa City, had been putting together a band and sealed the deal to have Skylar, originally from Seattle, join him in creating TRAPDOOR SOCIAL while hanging backstage at a Death Cab for Cutie concert at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles. They are a powerhouse duo, playing off of each other’s very different personalities – Merritt’s darker, angst-driven creativity coupled with Skylar’s bright and dynamic performance. “There is a serious dark thing and a serious light thing happening in TRAPDOOR SOCIAL.” says Skylar. “Merritt derives creative energy out of stress and anxiety – his art thrives when he’s suffering. My way is bouncing, affectionate, super positive – I live to be on stage.” Blue Genes FacebookLinks After attempting to pursue music independently but with no map or even compass, Stony Milvia decided he needed a band once again. After all he was not a DJ, and he had a soft spot for the touch that other people could lend to a composition. Around then he fortuitously met Chris Bales at Outside Lands in San Francisco who was suffering from the same desire: to make some noise. They started playing almost immediately and Chris proved to be a steady drummer who calmed Stony’s tempo tantrums. Later that month Chris and Stony played a show together that caught the ear of Mr. Marcus Hogle. Marcus was a veteran of the San Francisco music scene, a little bruised, but good news. Liking the vibrations, he approached the two-piece outfit and lent his talent to the task at hand; takin’ it to the tailor, pluggin’ a leaky hole and makin’ us a three-piece rock trifecta. And thus we now have the band known as Blue Genes, formed by collisions that twisted together to shed beautiful blue light across the land from out their hands. $8.00
