The Ghosts of Electricity is the ultimate Bob Dylan covers band, and considering that this is holiday time, perhaps the Ghosts will do songs from Dylan’s 2009 album, “Christmas in the Heart.” More likely, they may rip through “Highway 61,” “It Takes a lot to Laugh,” and “Knocking on Heaven’s Door.” This is the band’s first Ashkenaz show in a year – not counting the impromptu get-together at the club’s Dylan birthday celebration in May – so anything they do will be heavenly. What counts is that the Ghosts, who played their very first concert at Ashkenaz three years ago, teams some of the best improvising leaders from various Dead tribute groups into one all-star electric tribute to Dylan. Guitarists-singers Mark Karan (RatDog, Jemimah Puddleduck), Stu Allen (JGB, Mars Hotel) and Pat Nevins (Workingman’s Ed) play alongside bassist Robin Sylvester (RatDog), drummer Greg Anton (Zero), and keyboardist Mookie Siegel (David Nelson Band). Why Dylan? As one bandmember states, “For creative genius, simple great songwriting, depth of lyrics and prolificity, Dylan hits home.” Unlike some tribute bands that play a few covers and a bunch of their own songs, The Ghosts of Electricity play only Dylan compositions, including “Visions of Johanna” (the source of the band’s name), “All Along the Watchtower,” and “Like a Rolling Stone,” to name but a few.www.facebook.com/GhostsofElectricitySF
