Band members are Tessa Souter (vocals), Bill Anschell (piano) Don Braden (sax), Chris Symer (bass) and Jose Martinez (drums). Show time 7:30pm Monday. Doors open at 5:30pm both nights.Daughter of English and Trinidadian parents, award-winning, New York-based jazz vocalist Tessa Souter's gorgeous voice, and penchant for exploring strikingly beautiful music mostly untouched by other vocalists, has set her apart as "one of the few exceptional standouts in the crowded field of female jazz singers." - Los Angeles TimesThree critically acclaimed albums - Listen Love (Nara, 2004), which evokes the sensuality and passion of Andalusian Spain and the Middle East, the mostly standards Nights of Key Largo (Venus, 2008), which won Japan's prestigious Swing Journal Gold Disc Award, and her Motema debut, Obsession (2009), featuring daring takes on pop icons the Beatles and Cream, as well as compositions by Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Milton Nascimento, Dori Caymmi and Kenny Barron, firmly positioned Souter as a singer "whose unique style, precise articulation and stunning voice have established her as a vocalist to reckon with." - AllAboutJazzNow, her newest release, Beyond the Blue (Motema, 2012), is being lauded as her breakout recording. "The beauty of this project lies in the synergy of melodies, lyrics, and Souter's consummate musicality, carried by her clarion, gently burnished timbre. Apparently, she is incapable of singing off-key: none of these melodies was written with a vocalist in mind, but she navigates the most difficult intervals among them with the ease of someone practicing her scales. She can also swing out, and makes room to do so on this album, where her heritage - half British but half Trinidadian - forges to the front." - Chicago Examiner Beyond the Blue features Souter's own hauntingly evocative lyrics set to exquisite classical melodies, and partners her with six of the jazz world's elite -- pianist Steve Kuhn's superlative trio with bassist David Finck and drummer Billy Drummond, vibraphone master Joe Locke, saxophonist Joel Frahm, and Gary Versace on accordion. These greats provide a magical foundation over which Souter soars.
