The vocalist and songwriter's unique style is an alchemy of jazz, pop, and rock, with touches of gospel, folk, blues, and even a little humor sprinkled into the mix. She can be downright chameleonic, perpetually keeping her listeners guessing - is she a jazz chanteuse at heart, or is the folk singer-songwriter bent more her calling? The answer? Both, and so much more. Don't for a minute think that the breadth of her artistic palate belies a lack of depth or identity, however. Whether caressing a soft ballad or lacing a soulful line through a deep funk groove, Naylor's subtle inflections and rich, smoky alto are instantly recognizable and uniquely her own. Raised in Saratoga, California, Naylor first became interested in music through her parents' collection of antique automated instruments and vintage jazz recordings. She didn't initially realize that her taste wasn't exactly contemporary. "I didn't think this was old music - just what I listened to," she remembers. After pursuing marketing in college, she discovered music was her true calling and began studying with renowned San Francisco vocal coach Faith Winthrop. Subsequent years found her honing her vocal skills singing with the Sacred Heart Gospel Choir and training with Shirley Calloway. In 1997, she returned to San Francisco with one thing on her mind: to make singing her full-time career. It didn't take long for the jazz community to embrace Naylor as her music won fans of old-time aficionados, new jazz enthusiasts, and devotees of modern adult pop music alike. She released her self-titled debut on Ruby Records in 1999, inaugurating a string of successful albums that included I Remember You (2003), Shelter (2003), The Color Five (2006), and You Don't Know Jacqui (2008). She's performed at the Blue Note, Ronnie Scott's, The Monterey Jazz Festival, and other renowned venues, and several of her recordings have made Top 10 lists in publications like USA Today, JAZZIZ Magazine, and The Washington Post. Naylor celebrated the national release of her eighth and latest recording, Lucky Girl (2011), with a performance at the Blue Note last year. Tonight, she brings her wide vocal range and innovative style back to the club for an intimate set that will include both sensitive treatments of jazz standards and her captivating originals.
